Convocation

Class of 2028 enters their “Roll Wave Era”

During the President’s Convocation for New Students, a flurry of excitement, cheers, music and “Swifties” filled Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. As part of Hullabaloo Hello, Tulane’s spirited week-long orientation, the Convocation is the official welcome for incoming students. The event features addresses from President Michael A. Fitts, deans and senior administrators, along with plenty of Tulanian and New Orleans flair. Channeling the energy of Taylor Swift throughout his remarks, Fitts encouraged the Class of 2028 to “Embrace every era. Don’t be afraid of something new.”

Wave Weekend

Reliving Wave Weekend ‘24

Tulane students, families, alumni, staff, faculty and Green Wave fans gathered in November to celebrate Wave Weekend ‘24, featuring Homecoming, Reunions and Family Weekend. With 90 events on the schedule, attendees had their pick of reunions, concerts, tailgating, open houses, academic lectures and, of course, the big game!

Tulane experiences once-in-a-lifetime snowfall

Snow on campus

When snow blanketed Tulane in January, students made the most of the rare and magical event by building snowmen, making snow angels and enjoying impromptu winter games across campus. The snowfall amounted to a staggering 10 inches and marked the biggest snowfall to hit the region in over a century, with eventual totals rivaling a Valentine’s Day storm in 1895 as the biggest on record. The campus was closed the day of the storm, and all classes were held remotely for three days. In a city where snow is more often dreamed about than experienced, the sight of palm trees dusted in white and Gibson Quad transformed into a winter wonderland was nothing short of surreal. The snowstorm was a once-in-a-generation event that united the Tulane community in awe and celebration.

Commencement

Commencement celebrates Class of 2025 with joy and jazz

The academic year’s crowning event, Unified Commencement, featured a keynote address by entertainment icon Sheryl Lee Ralph, live jazz, second-lining and other hallmarks of Tulane’s uniquely spirited celebration. President Michael A. Fitts reminded the more than 2,000 graduates in attendance that life is filled with challenges, emotion and the thrill of the unknown — and that their Tulane experience has more than prepared them for the world that awaits.

Doctor earns MBA on 50th anniversary of med school graduation

For the 50th anniversary of his graduation from Tulane School of Medicine, Dr. Peter Kastl decided to do something extraordinary: Get another degree. Kastl, professor of ophthalmology at the School of Medicine, completed the requirements for a Master of Business Administration in December. In May, he crossed the stage in the Caesars Superdome to receive his diploma at the A. B. Freeman School of Business diploma ceremony, precisely 50 years after earning his medical degree.

Celebrating Dr. Michael White’s enduring Tulane legacy

Internationally renowned clarinetist, bandleader and scholar Dr. Michael White has helped shape both Tulane University and the broader tradition of New Orleans jazz. In recognition of his profound impact, the Newcomb Department of Music’s popular Thursday Night Jazz Series was renamed in his honor. A professor of music and leading authority on the city’s musical heritage, Dr. White has published extensively, preserved rare compositions, and mentored generations of musicians and students. At Tulane, his presence is a cherished tradition in itself: Dr. White and his Original Liberty Jazz Band have performed at countless university milestones, including Unified Commencement and the President’s Convocation for New Students, where their joyful sound has become an essential part of the Tulane experience.
